Middle School Electives

Middle School Electives:

In order to Empower Middle School students to Independently direct their education, every student gets the Responsibility of choosing electives courses that will help them explore various interests through special enrichment classes.  Electives classes are designed to be challenging, fun, and help Prepare students for their life beyond Woodrow Wilson Academy.  This includes exposure to Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish, as well as Technology.  These classes are designed to excite students with exposure various topics, motivate students to discover hidden talents and Succeed in areas they might not find on their own!

Art

Electives Art Courses at Woodrow Wilson Academy are comprised of Clay Creations, Photography, 3 Dimensional Sculpture, Drawing and Painting, and more.  Throughout the year, various forms of Middle School Art are displayed in several areas of the school to illustrate the talent and hard word of our students.  As the population changes and interests develop, the art courses also adjust and transform. Core Art classes are also part of student’s electives program, and all students are exposed to basic knowledge of methods and terminology, as well as becoming familiar with a wide range of artists and acknowledged masterworks.

Music

While students will be introduced to musicians and works from around the world and throughout history through Core Music classes, they will also have an opportunity to explore Drama, or learn to play an instrument like Piano or Guitar through Electives Music courses.  Opportunities to dance, sing, and play are at the core of each class, and creativity is always encouraged!

Physical Education

Woodrow Wilson Academy Physical Education program is based on movement and teamwork with the SPARK Curriculum.  In addition to student movement, Core PE Classes also focus on development of fine and gross motor skills as well as respectful sportsmanship.  Electives PE classes change each year depending on the student interests in various activities, but have included courses like Court Games, First Aid/CPR, Bowling, Archery, and Outdoor Games. Each year seems to have something new and exciting in the works.

Technology

Not only is technology used extensively throughout all grade levels starting in Kindergarten, but as students develop basic skills, they use them in integrated projects and prepare for the higher level technology electives and clubs offered in Middle School.  These change based on the newest technological development, but have included Video Production, Coding, Web design, 3D Printing, Robotics, and Minecraft courses! Core Tech classes continue to develop student’s understanding and knowledge of computers and various programs and ensure that all students walk away with exposure to many different programs and opportunities.

Spanish

Woodrow Wilson Academy believes that introducing students to world languages and culture will help students develop language skills as well as further expose students to cultural diversity.  Through our Spanish curriculum, Realidades, Middle School Core Spanish classes familiarize students with concepts of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and understanding another language.  While we don’t expect our students to become fluent speakers by the end of their courses, we hope to introduce them to a world of new language.

Library/Media

The Media Center’s open –door policy at flexible times throughout the day encourages students to use the library’s facilities for both research and reading for pleasure.
