WWA’s Annual Science Fair

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As you know, science, technology, and engineering are basic skills expected by many employers. As Twenty First Century citizens, our students will also have to make some of the toughest decisions of any generation, based on their understanding of emerging science and technology. Science fairs involve students in the practices of science and engineering, requiring them to apply those skills to a topic of interest to them. DOING SCIENCE IS THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING SCIENCE!!  Therefore, WWA will be holding this year’s school science fair over TWO DAYS. Projects will be due on Tuesday, March 17th, JUDGING DAY and the VIEWING DAY on Wednesday, March 18th parents are welcome to come during the school day (check in at the office) or after school from 3:30 - 6. All students grades Kinder-8^th have been invited to participate!

Kindergarten students are welcome to show what they know, though they will not be judged in the fair.  Judging will take place for grades 1^st-8^th. All classes Pre-Kindergarten through 8^th grade will be touring the fair!

Hands-on scientific investigation and invention are the focus at our particular fair.  All projects will be based around our Core Knowledge Themes: Physical Sciences,  Botany and Zoology, Earth and Space, and Medicine and Health Sciences.  1^st through 3^rd grade students will be able to create a model or demonstration within these themes, while 4^th through 8th grade students will be following the scientific method to create an experiment related to these same themes.  Students will be charged with creating a display that illustrates their knowledge of the topic they choose, including a description of their project (1^st-3^rd) or an illustration of the scientific method as it relates to their experiment (4^th-8^th).

Students participating in the science fair should refer to the attached guidelines to ensure successful participation. Please note much of the work will be self-directed. While family members may assist students at the Kindergarten through 3rd grade level, students must be the primary scientists and they are in charge of explaining everything that was done and answering any questions to the judges.  Additionally, family members may not help students with their projects in the 4^th through 8^th grade level, and may only encourage and help support students emotionally!  I encourage you to click on Science Buddies, All Science Fair Projects (by grade), Science Fair Central for further information designed for parents and students, for project help and ideas!

If your child is interested in participating, please fill out the student registration form online.  This can be viewed from the link on the WWA Home Page, through the link above, or you can pick up a form from the office.  Those who have submitted their registration will be given a packet with further information. This will include a pacing timeline, specific guidelines, and further information to get your child started.  Feel free to begin your work as soon as you receive the packet!
